Deforestation from charcoal production and agricultural expansion is a primary driver of forest degradation in Tanzania. As forests and soils degrade, rural incomes collapse, pushing youth toward city and cross-border work with little protection, easy targets for labor brokers and traffickers. Biodiversity conservation in the Usambara Mountains preserves both the ecosystem and the economic foundation that keeps communities stable.
