Trees planted through Usambara Biodiversity Conservation
Deforestation from charcoal production and agricultural expansion is a primary driver of forest degradation in Tanzania. As forests and soils degrade, rural incomes collapse, pushing youth toward city and cross-border work with little protection, easy targets for labor brokers and traffickers. Biodiversity conservation in the Usambara Mountains preserves both the ecosystem and the economic foundation that keeps communities stable.
Every seedling planted today is an investment in a greener, healthier tomorrow.
Our incredible volunteers are hard at work in the Friends of Usambara tree nursery, nurturing young trees that will help restore our environment, protect biodiversity, and strengthen local communities. Their dedication reminds us that meaningful change begins with small actions and grows through collective effort.
Together, we are cultivating a future where forests thrive, wildlife flourishes, and future generations can enjoy the beauty of the Usambara Mountains.
π Thank you to all our volunteers for your passion, commitment, and hard work. Every tree you plant makes a difference.
In the heart of the Usambara Mountains, women are carrying more than seedlings on their headsβthey are carrying the future of our forests, our water sources, our biodiversity, and the generations to come.
Walking long distances to reach restoration sites, their dedication and resilience are helping transform degraded landscapes into thriving ecosystems. Every step they take brings us closer to a greener, healthier Usambara.
Through our large-scale landscape restoration initiative, Friends of Usambara is planting millions of seedlings to restore forests, strengthen climate resilience, and support sustainable livelihoods for local communities.

At the Friends of Usambara Society Tree Nursery, women are leading the fight against climate change. Every day, dedicated women work tirelessly to nurture millions of seedlings that are now ready to be planted across our landscapes.
These trees will help:
πΏ Restore degraded land
πΏ Protect biodiversity
πΏ Reduce carbon emissions
πΏ Improve water sources
πΏ Secure a greener future for generations to come
By supporting women-led environmental action, we are not only planting trees β we are planting hope, resilience, and sustainable livelihoods.
Together, let us take these seedlings from the nursery to the ground and make a real impact against global climate change.
At our planting site in the Usambara Mountains, we are proud to plant Tabernaemontana usambarensis β a unique tree species found only in the Usambara region of Tanzania. πΉπΏ
Through our Large Landscape Restoration Program, we are working to restore degraded land, protect endemic species, and strengthen the natural beauty and ecological health of the Usambara Mountains for future generations.

Planting trees is more than restoring landscapes β it is planting hope for future generations.
We champion women as vital leaders in climate action and ecological restoration. Our projects support women with resources, training and spaces to grow their skills, protect their rights and lead community-driven change.
By challenging dominant power structures, amplifying Indigenous and community voices, and centring gender equity in all we do, we aim to redefine ethical restoration and uplift women and marginalised communities both within our projects and wider society.
RESTORE & REFOREST.
We donβt just plant trees – we support long-term forest care that restores habitats, strengthens communities, and helps biodiversity thrive
Our work centres local knowledge, uplifts women, and respects the deep connection between people and the land.
Our projects restore some of the country's most biodiverse regions by working directly with communities to lead the restoration of their lands. We build trust, collaborate closely, and prioritise community perspectives, self-determination, and agency.
Why we plant trees
We recognise the multiple benefits of trees for both people and planet. We plant trees to:
Β· Restore and protect forests
Β· Capture carbon and combat the effects of climate change
Β· Increase and support vital biodiversity
Β· Create and improve livelihoods
Β· Support gender inclusion and advance gender justice
Β· Improve farming outcomes through agroforestry
Β· Improve access to vital resources like food and medicine.
βWe work in deep collaboration with our partners, prioritising local leadership, trust and long-term care. Restoration must honour the choices and voices of communities, fostering agency, connection and collective healing.
