DIRECT IMPACT

A study by Coram International in partnership with UNICEF and the Institute of Labour and Social Sciences, found that an estimated 5.6% of children in Vietnam may have experiences related to child trafficking. Though the study showed that boys and girls were equally at risk, most services on the ground in Vietnam are targeted towards female trafficking victims. 

Not for Sale has partnered with Blue Dragon to address this resource deficit, creating the first housing for young boys that had been sexually or otherwise exploited in Vietnam. We provide long-term care, shelter, educational opportunities and job training to help future-proof their development, as well as offering crisis care to kids on the street 24/7 – from emergency shelter and healthcare to food and clothes.

OUR CHALLENGES

Alongside this, Vietnam is witnessing a mass migration of rural children into cities. Driven away from home by domestic violence, family breakdown and in many cases extreme poverty, these children, particularly boys, travel into cities like Hanoi in search of freedom, money and opportunity. Alone, with unlimited access to the internet via cyber cafes, they are highly vulnerable to trafficking, forced marriage, labor exploitation, forced begging and contact from online pedophiles.

OUR WORK

Not For Sale has developed a scholarship program to provide housing, school fees, supplies and emotional support for vulnerable children in rural parts of Peru. We created community gardens in six schools to educate students, teachers and family members on the importance of proper nutrition, as well as promoting self-sufficiency. Not for Sale has developed fish farms to provide the community with clean nutrition, free from mercury poisoning (from gold mines). 

We provide artisan training and small business workshops to hundreds of women in the Amazon, helping develop self-esteem while learning marketable trades and skill sets. This increases household income – shown to prolong schooling and reduce labor for their children. 

To increase economic opportunity in the region, Not for Sale has supported the AFIMAD cooperative; nine indigenous communities that sustainably gather Brazil nuts from the Amazon. We have increased the value of their crop by paying for organic certification and commit to purchasing part of their harvest.

OUR CHALLENGES

The demographics of trafficking victims is approximated as – 86.2% female, 82.7% children, 75.9% trafficked for sex, 41.4% trafficked for labor. Labor-trafficking occupations are most often domestic work and nannying, or mining. The most common types of sex trafficking are street prostitution, brothel prostitution and sex tourism.

Not For Sale provides children with housing and education in Chiang Rai. Stateless children face difficulties in enrolling in any official Thai school, so struggle to get an education and are aggressively targeted by human traffickers. It is estimated that up to 200,000 migrant children are not in school. Education has the power to eliminate the language barrier, increase socio-economic status and provide children with security. 

We provide children with safety, stability, nutritious meals and medical care. We enroll all children in primary, secondary, or university education and offer shelter and long-term housing for youth rescued from exploitation. We provide a variety of life skills to equip the children to become self-sufficient, contributing members of the community. Not For Sale Thailand has been named by the Thai National Government a ‘model program’ for the border regions of the country.

OUR CHALLENGES

Sex trafficking remains the most prevalent form of trafficking, with women at a disproportionately high risk. Research shows women migrant workers come to Thailand at a younger age than males – 37% are between 15 to 24 years old. 

Labor trafficking regularly occurs in the fishing industry. Victims, lured with false advertisements, are paid little, may become victims of debt-bondage labor and are forced to work inhumane hours in dangerous conditions.
