Ethiopian police have arrested 17 suspects accused of running a trafficking network that moved more than 40,000 people toward Saudi Arabia through Djibouti and Yemen, exposing the scale of exploitation along one of the world’s most dangerous migration routes.

A new United Nations report warns that human trafficking is becoming increasingly intertwined with artificial intelligence, cryptocurrency and global online fraud, revealing how organised crime has evolved into a sophisticated digital economy that exploits both those forced to commit scams and those who fall victim to them.

Scam compound human trafficking is a layered exploitation system in which people are forced to conduct online fraud while others are financially deceived. Recent investigations also show that women may be forced into sexual exploitation and, in some operations, used as “rewards” for workers who meet fraud targets.
