Unseen entrepreneurs: Empowering survivors through enterprise
5 MIN READ

Entrepreneurship isn’t always about headlines and IPOs. Sometimes, it’s quiet resilience. A reclaimed voice. A business built not for dominance, but for dignity.
At Not For Sale, these are the kinds of entrepreneurs we champion. They’re the ones changing lives from the ground up.
On World Entrepreneurs Day, we celebrate a different kind of founder
Each year, World Entrepreneurs Day is often marked with success stories of unicorn companies and tech founders. But at Not For Sale, we celebrate those using enterprise to unlock human potential, protect the planet, and restore agency to those who’ve had it stolen.
These are the unseen entrepreneurs. Whether they’re famous for their success or working quietly behind the scenes, they’re visionaries who see business as a tool not for power, but for justice.
Across our global network, from Peru to South Africa, we partner with individuals and enterprises turning the tide on exploitation. Through ethical supply chains, sustainable business models, and inclusive leadership, they’re showing that a better world isn’t just possible, but it’s already being built.
Sheryl O’Loughlin: Building with purpose from REBBL to beyond
Few leaders embody values-led entrepreneurship like Sheryl O’Loughlin. The former CEO of Clif Bar, co-founder of Plum Organics, and CEO of REBBL, Sheryl helped shape a new generation of mission-driven companies.
REBBL (which stands for Roots, Extracts, Berries, Bark, and Leaves) was seeded by Not For Sale to combat human trafficking in the Peruvian Amazon. With every bottle sold, REBBL supports efforts to create resilient communities that are no longer vulnerable to exploitation.
Under Sheryl’s leadership, REBBL didn’t just grow, it became a blueprint for what ethical consumer brands could look like. She helped build a company that proved you can lead with purpose and still thrive in the marketplace.

Redefining protection for a borderless world
Andrew Jernigan has spent his career reimagining what safety and security mean in an age where work and travel have no boundaries. As CEO and co-founder of Insured Nomads, he leads the global insurance platform built to protect people, wherever life and opportunity take them.
From providing benefits for remote teams to safeguarding humanitarian workers on the move, Andrew’s vision goes beyond traditional insurance. It’s about pairing protection with purpose, making sure that freedom to explore and work globally doesn’t come at the cost of vulnerability.
Through Insured Nomads’ partnership with Not For Sale, Andrew channels this mission into action, supporting communities at risk of exploitation around the world. His leadership exemplifies how modern enterprise can champion justice, creating solutions that keep people safe while tackling the root causes of human trafficking.
Anita Roddick: A legacy of business as activism
Though she passed in 2007, Anita Roddick’s legacy burns brightly within our work at Not For Sale. As the founder of The Body Shop, Anita proved decades ago that business could be a force for human rights and environmental protection, long before the term “social enterprise” became popular.
She inspired a generation of ethical entrepreneurs, many of whom have supported or been supported by the Not For Sale mission. Her vision – that commerce and compassion can coexist – continues to shape how we build partnerships and ventures today.
Anita was proof that activism doesn’t need a protest sign. Sometimes, it comes with a balance sheet.
Kelly Slater: Surfing toward sustainability in South Africa
It’s not every day a world champion athlete turns to social impact, but Kelly Slater has never followed the script.
Known globally for rewriting the rules of surfing, Kelly brings that same mindset to his ventures off the board. From launching a sustainable clothing brand to investing in wave technology, his business choices reflect a commitment to innovation with purpose.
That spirit extends to his support of Surfers Not Street Children in South Africa, a Not For Sale partner initiative founded by long-time friend Tom Hewitt. The project empowers young people with mentorship, education, and community, using surfing as a catalyst for change.
Kelly is part of a growing movement of high-profile figures putting purpose behind their platform and proving that influence, when aligned with impact, can help build freedom through opportunity.

Around the world, enterprise is rewriting the story
In Vietnam, Peru, the Netherlands, South Africa, and beyond, entrepreneurship is at the heart of our mission.
We don’t just provide aid. We partner with survivors, risk communities, and visionary leaders to build businesses that protect rather than exploit. Whether it’s a farming co-op, a sustainable clothing brand, or a high-tech start-up tackling carbon emissions, the goal is the same: freedom through enterprise.
The world doesn’t need more empty brands. It needs entrepreneurs willing to put justice at the center of everything they do.
Entrepreneurs making a difference through ethical business
Entrepreneurs are often seen as innovators, risk-takers, and business leaders. But a growing number are also changemakers, using enterprise to solve social and environmental problems. These ethical entrepreneurs focus on more than just profit — they design companies that uplift communities, reduce exploitation, and protect the planet.
Not For Sale supports and partners with entrepreneurs who embed purpose into their business models. This includes leaders like Sheryl O’Loughlin, who scaled REBBL to support communities vulnerable to trafficking; Andrew Jernigan, who protects people across boundaries; and Kelly Slater, who drives innovation through sustainable business development. These entrepreneurs prove that you don’t need to choose between impact and income – you can build both.
By investing in solutions instead of charity alone, these founders are part of a growing global shift: enterprise as a tool for freedom, sustainability, and long-term change. Whether starting a business from scratch or reshaping an existing brand, these stories show what’s possible when entrepreneurship is guided by values.
